Things To Do In Koh Phangan

Although you many not want to leave the lounger of your luxury apartment for the duration of your holiday, if you are feeling more active there are plenty of things to do in Koh Phangan.

Diving - Due to the vibrant coral life along the West coast of the island, Koh Phangan has established itself as a world class diving centre. There are many diving schools in Koh Phangan where you can learn to dive in small groups and there is also plenty of diving for the more experienced divers.
Sail Rock Divers in Chaloklum are the PADI Dive Centre of Excellence in SE Asia and they will collect and return guests to and from the apartment for diving trips.

Snorkelling - There are plenty of accessible spots for snorkelling in Koh Phangan, particularly in Koh Ma.

Kitesurfing - there are numerous Kite surfing schools in Ban Tai and the warm weather and shallow waters make Koh Phangan a popular place to learn to kitesurf. There are also a number of Wakeboarding schools on the island.

Boat trips - There are plenty of boat trips running daily from most of the beaches. There are a whole host of boats ranging from a speed boat or a more traditional long tail boat to any of the beautiful unspoilt beaches including Bottle Beach or Haad Yuan or Than Sadet. Another popular boat trip is to the nearby Ang Thong Marine Park. This national park covers 42 islands in a total area of 102 km², of which only 18 km² are land. It is home to a whole host of wildlife including birds, monkeys and bats as well as some stunning fish, dolphins and whales.

Kayaking - With calm waters and plenty of accessible beaches to explore, Koh Phangan is a popular spot for kayaking. Kayaks are available to hire from most beaches at very reasonable rates.

Jungle treks/Elephant treks - Much of Koh Phangan remains unspoilt and uninhabited jungle land which makes it perfect for trekking. The hike to Khao Ra is worth it for the panoramic views of Koh Phangan from the top. There are also popular trekking trails from Haad Rin to the secluded beach of Haad Yuan and from Chaloklum to Bottle Beach.

Walk through the Trees - There is a well-run canopy adventure ‘Just for fun’ on the road to Thong Nai Pan. Not for the faint-hearted this is a round trip across 8 cable walkways and zip lines through the trees. You can also enjoy a fish spa pedicure in this stunning setting.

Yoga - Koh Phangan has also become well known as a destination for those looking for a more spiritual experience. There are numerous yoga retreats all over the island which offer all types of yoga including hatha, ashtanga and vinyasa yoga. 

There are also a number of wellness centres for those looking to do residential detox or meditation courses. Koh Phangan is home to the famous Sanctuary resort which offers yoga and vegetarian food in a beautiful setting on a secluded beach.

Cookery courses - there are a number of cookery schools in Koh Phangan. My Wok and me which operates in Thongsala has fully trained English speaking chefs. The course includes a guided trip to the local market where you purchase all your ingredients. After cooking you can enjoy the fruits of your labour!

Restaurants - You will be spoilt for choice for restaurants in Koh Phangan. Not only are there many excellent traditional Thai restaurants serving fresh Thai food at very reasonable prices, there is a whole host of cuisines to choose from. The recent surge in popularity of the island has seen the opening of a number of restaurants including Italian, French, Mexican, Russian, Greek, and even a Japanese restaurant. There are some great seafood restaurants with fresh fish being caught locally daily. The growth of the number of luxury hotels and private apartments on the island have seen the emergence of some upmarket restaurants serving both Thai and Western food in beautiful settings.

Nightlife - Once only known for the Full Moon parties, a multitude of sophisticated cocktail bars and cool nightspots are now dotted around the island. Dubbed the new Ibiza without the price tag, Koh Phangan has seen recent openings of a number beautiful clubs with beach front locations which attract world class DJs on a regular basis.

Shopping - There are now a growing number of quality clothes and jewellery shops in Thongsala and Haad Rin, where you can find good quality hand-made clothes and jewellery at very affordable prices. There is a pedestrian street market every Saturday evening from 4-10pm where there are street food stalls and stalls selling locally crafted products and souvenirs.

Massages/Beauty treatments - massage huts are dotted along almost all of the beaches and also inland, which provide traditional Thai or oil massages and beauty treatments at very reasonable prices. For those looking for some luxury and pampering, high end boutique resorts in Thong Nai Pan and Thong Sala offer the full range of treatments in opulent settings.
